Environmentally responsible act a day!

Did you hear about this guy who did not throw out trash for a whole entire year? Yeah, it’s true and he blogged about it. He just finished his stint and I just caught a glimpse of it at the end. That’s mind boggling to me. As much as I try to recycle things around my house, I’m always throwing something out. In fact, today is a garbage pick up day and I threw out three bags of garbage!! That’s for one week!

Not that I’m going to be this guy ‘Dave’, but I am really going to try to NOT to throw out garbage this year. Try to reduce and reuse more than I am. In fact, to take a step further, I’m going to do one environmentally responsible act every day. Saving one thing that I could have thrown out could be considered one act. Will you do it with me? Can you let me know what environmentally responsible thing you did every day and comment here? We can encourage each other. This will be fun. If every one of us did this, we can make a difference! Don’t you think?

Look at all these plastic bottles. This image is from Dave’s blog.

Hi Ruth,I love the water conservation idea! I'm gonna run out and put a bucket out there. It's raining right now. Thanks!

Today I went shopping and I used reusable grocery bags and refused the disposable bags.My reusable bags are pretty big and I think I probably refused about 10 (or even more?) of the disposable ones.I also had a few messes to clean up around the house and I didn't use one disposable towel!! But I do that all the time-used cloths (one handmade)!!I also conserved water - when it snowed & rained, I put a bucket out there to catch the water and am using that to water my plants rather than water from the pipes!Ruth

T-shirts are a great idea too! I will put some old ones to work!

Krissy,I know what you mean about paper towel. My mother reuses paper towel, like three times, before she throws it out. She washes it - yeah, literally - and dries it and reuses it. I use old worn out t-shirts that my family can't wear anymore. They are soft, very absorbent and great for drying (and washing too) - better than kitchen towels. Thanks for sharing and let us know how you make out with flour sack towels. May be you should try my acrylic scrubbies for washing things in your studio. :)

Hi! I am really trying to cut down on paper towel usage in my studio. I screenprint and dye tote bags and typically make a huge mess. Also, I am constantly washing off squeegees and screens so I am always in the sink. I just got a shipment of flour sack towels in the mail; I plan to use them to replace my over usage of paper towels. I really want to cut down. I'll let you know how it goes!
