No…..it’s not sushi. But the idea does come from Japan. Furoshiki is a cloth that can be used to wrap all sorts of gifts and bags. It is a wonderful way of not using plastic to carry things and saving gift wrapping paper. Watch this video and learn how to wrap gifts and make bags using this ingenious method. The Minister of the Environment, Yuriko Koike, created a version made from recycled plastic bottles, called mottainai furoshiki. Mottainai means, “it’s a shame for something to go to waste without having made use of its potential in full.” Here is an illustration by the Japanese Ministry of Environment on how to use Furoshiki. (Click the picture to zoom.) The cloth does not have to be anything fancy – just any cloth that you like. Another great way to reuse vintage linens, fabric, and even large scarves!

I was inspired by this and I will be featuring some great Furoshiki in my shop. Check back soon!
