Here are five more things about myself

in Life

6. I am a Chiropractor turned SAHM (that’s…Stay At Home Mom for those who are not into acronyms). I “retired” from practice to stay home with my kids when their school load started to get bigger and they started to fence (their choice of sport) more competitively. It was a very hard decision after all the schooling I’ve done to be a doctor. My son was six months old when I started chiropractic school and I had my daughter while in school. I know, I was crazy but I couldn’t have done it if it wasn’t for my husband and my family’s support. But even after all that sacrifice, at the end of the day, my family came first. I didn’t want to feel guilty about someone else raising my kids. But I also felt guilty that I wasn’t taking care of my patients when I was with my kids. So, when my son was thirteen years old, I sold my practice to a very competent doctor who I knew would take care of my patients and gave her the key to the office with everything in it….even my plants!! I don’t regret the decision and I enjoy every minute I spend with my kids, as they are already getting ready to leave for college soon. Sniffle….

7. I would love to have a farm and live off the land. All I need are fresh vegetables, fruits, and fresh eggs. I wish I can grow my own produce and herbs right now but I live in a development and spraying with pesticides and chemical fertilizer is a monthly event (they say that they are non-toxic but I know they are not that safe) and I wouldn’t want to eat anything that grew in my backyard with all that chemical.

8. I admit, I was a prude when it came to social networking. I always heard horrible stories about stalkers and never got interested in it. But when I found out that it was almost “required” to network for Etsy, I reluctantly, crossed over and opened a facebook account and a twitter account. And guess what? I am really enjoying tweeting and being on facebook. I have a business account and I just opened a personal account to find my old friends from High School, college, and grad school. So now, I’m on it all the time. It’s so addicting!! I found some old friends that I lost in touch with, connected with young nephews who think I’m really a hip aunt, and I can keep one eye peeled to see what my kids’ friends are saying about them. Sneaky, I know, but they know I’m lurking. (he he he…)

9. My hair is turning grey and I am not sure how I feel about it. I go days without worrying about covering them because I look as if I am finally coming into my age. My younger brother jokes that I am more conservative than our mother and I am an “old soul”. So when I see myself with some grey, I feel like ‘myself.’ But then, on some mornings, I go “Ugh!” and I run to hide the grey with a hair wash, all natural, of course. And for the next four weeks, I feel young again, whatever that means. I mean, age is all in the mind, right? But sometimes grey hair just stare at me to remind me that I have to act my age and I want to rebel. Do you ever feel that way? One minute, you are totally comfortable in your own skin and the next minute, you want to crawl out of it? I guess that’s what makes the “woman of certain age” so exciting – there’s never a dull moment! Ha!

10. I believe life is given to you and you don’t have a choice in the matter. But then, how you live your life and what you make out of it is totally up to you. I mean, do you think you had a choice of being born? No. But you do have a choice in how to live it. No one can make you do anything. It is totally up to you. It doesn’t matter whether you are rich or poor, smart or not so smart, short or tall, woman or man – you make your own destiny and how you get there. It’s very simple. Not so complicated. But then, that’s just my opinion. You have your own opinion and only you can make the decisions. And that’s powerful! Don’t you think?

Whew! It took two weeks to reveal ten measly things about myself. I hope I don’t have to reveal ten new ones any time soon. If I have to, the next ten will be very short. I promise.

Now bloggies. This is hard because like I said in the previous post about myself, I love reading blogs. Well, ten is too short of a list so I’ll list ten that are non-etsy related and ten that are by my fellow etsians. Oh, by the way, if you have e-mail subscription links on your blog, I especially love you because I’ll get updates right to my inbox and my phone so I can read those blogs immediately, wherever I am. I’d love for you to sign up for my blog with your e-mails too.

So here goes, not in any particular order.

Awww, I am one happy goat. The publicist has given up on her hair too. It is now more grey than the mousy brown she was born with.

She is loving her Farm life. Given that she was a city girl and now she milks goats and takes care of chickens, whew. She and the male person grew enough vegetables last year that they didn't have to buy any at all – well except for a couple of onions to make stock; and this year they planted onions!

They have friends that give them access to fruit and they have probably only spent about $100 on fruit in the last two years and they have fruit of some kind every night for dessert. It's a great life. Soon they will have all their own eggs.

Thanks for mentioning my blog. You made my goat day.

Hi Karen:

Great post.

To a few of your points…

#7 I, too, want to live on a small farm–and have started to look at places in Schoharie county.

#9 Your greying must be recent–I've never seen even a thread of grey. I don't know how old you are, but you look incredibly young!! Healthy living?

Grey hair can be gorgeous–but it does depend somewhat on the color grey that comes in.

The choice to go grey or color hair can be complicated–and I think it becomes more so the older we get. I support whichever choice a woman decides to make.

That said, I think ours is an ageist culture and some of my women friends feel they must relentlessly focus on looking youthful to compete in the workplace.

Entrepreneurs like you create their own work, however.

Thanks for mentioning my blog. I am honored to be chosen as one of your faves!

You guys are so kind to stop by to say hello.

Lurking is always good when your intentions are good. Grey is my favorite color these days, and yeah, your blogs start my day so keep up the good work!

Come by more often. Bring coffee or tea and let's lurk together.

Lorraine, (copywriter's kitchen blog lady) did you see the Peach Cobbler I made on my fb? My first! If you didn't, here is my link.

Karen, you are awesome… It was fun reading something about yourself! Chiropractor? I didn't know it. My husband needs a really good one. :-) he's had so many mishaps,(not my fault:-)

Thank you so much for letting me know about this post, sorry that I could not leave a comment before but as I told you I was really, really busy.

Thanks again for including me in your lists.

It's great getting to know you better. I had to laugh at the grey hair one – I am SOOO there. Can't decide if I like having grey hair or not. I swear it can be minutes between liking it and deciding to dye it.

You are such a dear!
