Yesterday was one week anniversary since my new blog posted here on Word Press and opened a second shop on Etsy. There were many reasons why I dreaded the task of moving and opening a second shop, as you can imagine. Then, how did I do it? Well, I couldn’t have done the bold move without the help of some amazing women who are not only successful at what they do in their businesses, but also are hard working moms.
I am dedicating this week to all those moms who work tirelessly at their jobs and who make sure that the family doesn’t suffer because of their successes. I especially salute these women who helped me “get off my duff” and actually do the move that I feared to do.
Lorraine Thompson (a friend who told me how to choose a hosting company and how important SEO is.)
1. What is your name and your company’s name? ![]()
www.MarketCopwriter.com, Copywriting Services
2. How long have you had this company?
18 years.
3. What is your business about and what inspired you to open the company?
I write strategic, targeted marketing and advertising copy that helps companies brand themselves, build relationships, enhance image and boost sales. Before turning to freelance copywriting I was an actress and playwright in New York and regional theatre. My acting experience helps me empathetically understand customers and speak to them personably and persuasively.
4. Have you had other companies?
My husband and I managed a New York City theatre company.
5. What does your day look like?
I work from a home office and juggle multiple client projects as well as regular posts on my blog, CopywritersKitchen.com. I start early in the day—as early as 5am if I’m pressed. I knock off around 7am to get my kids off to school and walk my dog, Toby.
I’m usually back at my desk and drafting copy by 8:30am. I work until my kids come home in the late afternoon, take a short break to touch base with them, then work until dinner time.
I cook dinner most nights—my husband or teens cook when I don’t. We’re committed to scratch-cooked family meals despite everyone’s harried schedules.
6. Do you work in an office outside the home or do you work at home? And if you work at home, how do you manage your office space and personal space?
I work at home. It was great while my children were young and I worked part time. Now I’m strongly considering a separate office. I’ve managed the home-office thing by enlisting cooking and cleaning help from my teens and husband. And by disciplining myself to ignore household messes during business hours. If I stopped to make beds, wipe counters and wash laundry I would never meet my clients’ deadlines.
7. What’s your secret for balancing work and personal life, if there is such a thing?
I struggle with this. I work long hours and don’t get enough exercise—still trying to incorporate regular exercise. Honestly? I think the idea of work-family-personal life balance is a myth—at least in workaholic American culture. I think the idea of “sequencing” work, family, etc. is more realistic. When my children were young and needed my hands-on care, I worked part-time. Now that they’re older and don’t need “all hands on deck” all day, I work longer hours.
8. What did you say when asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” at age five?
I wanted to be, in this order: a vet, a doctor, a ballerina.
9. What do you do at home and in your office (if outside the home) that’s healthy for the environment as well as your own health?
I cook healthy meals from scratch and I’m committed to buying only humanely raised, grassfed meats. I recycle, compost, use plastic sparingly—I prefer glass food storage—and enthusiastically buy whatever I can second hand at flea markets and vintage stores.
Now something for fun…,
10. Cats or dogs? Dogs—love maligned “bully breeds” like boxers, bulldogs and pit bulls!
11. Favorite color? White.
12. Beach or the woods? Woods.
13. City or the country? Country.
14. Favorite Movie? Auntie Mame.
15. Dress or Jeans? Jeans.
16. Favorite Book? Shakespeare’s collected works.
17. Where can we find you?
