I know you’ve been reading a lot about waste free lunch bags lately but I wanted to tell you about a particular company I really like. Why? It’s owned by a couple of caring mompreneurs who not only care about the health of your kids but also about the environment. The company is called Kids Konserve. The company carries a full line of waste free lunch system from bags, lunch containers, water bottles, and reusable napkins. The lunch bag line is made with recycled, non-leaching, BPA, PVC, Pthalate, and Lead free plastic. The stainless steel containers are mostly recycled stainless steel and come in practical sizes for nesting.

And why should you use reusable bags for lunch? Here are some facts:

  • Children’s lunches create 3.5 billion pounds of garbage each year.
  • 18,760 pounds of trash is generated annually from one average sized elementary school
  • 80% of the 31 billion single serving plastic water bottles Americans use each year end up in landfills.
  • It takes a 15 year old tree to produce 700 brown paper bags.

And in general…..

  • Prevent pollution on land and in our waters
  • Conserve natural resources such as coal, oil, natural gas, and trees
  • Save energy and money
  • Reduce the need for disposal
  • According to Container Recycling Institute, americans will buy an estimated 25 billion single-serving, plastic water bottles this year and eight out of 10 (22 billion) will end up in a landfill.
  • Packing waste-free allows you to buy in bulk. The packaging can be left at home to be recycled or reused.
  • Waste-free lunches are not only a wise environmental choice, but they are less expensive as well.

How to pack waste free lunch.

  • wrap sandwiches in a food kozy instead of baggies, wraps, or foil
  • pack fruit, crackers, nuts, fresh vegetables in a stainless steel food container
  • use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins (also great to use as a placemat)
  • use reusable stainless steel bottle
  • don’t use brown paper bag – use reusable lunch sack or lunchbox

(What to avoid:  plastic bags, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, wax paper, and prepackaged foods whenever possible).

And this is the best part – until September 31, 2009, KidsKonserve is offering 15% off for ecokaren readers. Just put code ‘ecokaren’ when you check out.

I think this system is great for adults too as the prints don’t scream “Kids!”

Disclaimer: I have not been paid or endorsed by Kids Konserve to write this article. I just think it’s a great idea and I love their campaign to educate the kids in schools through their community activities. Check out their website as to how your school can get involved in conserving our environment.

I like this set, but sometimes I find this is too bulky with all the other things that have to go into your (or your child’s) bag.
These Enviro-Lunch Sets are a good alternative. They’re not plastic and they’re not bulky. Plus if your child likes the fabric, the bags WILL come home with them :)
