Refresh button

I need to hit the “Refresh” button today.

I made a new year’s plan to reorganize and de-clutter my life. But I’ve only been thinking about so many ideas and ‘to-do’ lists to organize that I have to sit and breath a little to figure out ‘how’ to tackle the plan.

So this is a short- I mean, short – list of things that I need to organize. I am secretly hoping that ya’ll can help me.

1. Blog – need a header – the sparse white space where it now just says “Ecokaren – smart ideas for green living and handmade life”. I tried designing it myself and who am I kidding. I don’t even have a graphics software for it. I was just copying and pasting pictures and it didn’t work. So, I need a professional to do it for me. Know anyone?

2. Shop – need to stock the shelves. I just managed to list a few journals I’ve been working on since January but I have so many more items in my head and I can’t get ‘there’ to create them. So, I need to just sit down and “CReATe”!! And to list my supplies. A ton of supplies!! Scrapbooking demons would just L O V E my stash!! I just need a few elves to list them for me. (Still in search of elves. Know any elves?)

3. House – wooooo, can’t even think about this. Need so much organizing and cleaning. Don’t even know where to begin with this one.

4. Finances – I keep reading the “Quit Your Day Job” series on Etsy and I go, “Huh? Really? How?” I really want to be able to do that but I haven’t found my niche yet. So, I continue to try. I added a new line of items, upcycled journals, and I am making changes to the designs and such but then, I thought, maybe people want more jewelry and not journals!! But how many jewelry designers can Etsy support???I know of at least one very successful jewelry designer that just closed her shop to “regroup”. By golly, if she did that, what does that mean for the rest of the jewelry designers? Got me re-thinking about Etsy.

5. Family – no need to do any “reorganizing” in this department – but I wish I can do more to help them be less stressed. I am frazzled sometimes too but I have this need to help them – it’s the mother and the wife in me, I guess. But it stresses me MORE to watch them being in such hectic, busy, and disarray. A pressure filled job in this difficult economy is so un-nerving for the hubby and being in high school at ANY time is stressful but even more so, it seems, in this generation.

6. Eco-disaster – I am in constant turmoil with the ‘new’ news that comes up every day about the dire situation. I’m bombarded every day – assaulted is more like it – with the news about tainted foods (do you know what I should do with a case of canned tomatoes? Don’t tell me to donate them because I wouldn’t feed them to my dog, why would I give them to someone?), greedy corporations that ignore the environment, toxic chemicals that invade our bodies and homes, so on….

So this is the plan I came up with.

1. Header – I’m going to outsource my header to a competent graphic artist who can help me coordinate the design with my banner on Etsy.

2. Shop – I’m going to be really disciplined and create at least 3-4 hours a day. I’m planning to be featured as one of the “Quit Your Day Job” sellers in a year – or less.

3. Finance – if I do #2 right, I may not need to worry about this one.

4. Family – they are not so bad. I just need to “let go” and not worry so much. I can’t control everything. And the kids? They are learning how to handle stress too and they are handling it far better than I give them credit for, I think. I’ll jump in when I think they need my help, but until then, I won’t stress over their stress (?) so much.

5. Eco-disaster – this is the toughest one. But as in #4, I can only do so much. As long as I do my part, it should be all right. I’ll continue to spread the word (I’m invited to speak at my school district’s PTA meeting in March about the environment) and be involved (this announcement will come later once things are more solidified) as much as I can. What else can I do?

6. House – well, some things gotta give. Lucky for the dust bunnies – they can hang out a little bit longer.

How was your January?

Have you been successful in following up with your 2010 plans (aka. resolution)?

My January was a little crazy, but I think we got the year off to a good start. We are trying to live simply this year, not just because of cutbacks (DH is working only three days a week now) but we want to lower our impact on the environment. I find myself questioning everything we purchase, bunding up more instead of turning the heat up, and making what I can from scratch.

Last year, I lost my job (one I really loved too) and I’ve really learned how to do MORE with less. Also, Craigslist has been a big part of that. Any time I feel like I need to shop I check Craigslist first. When I feel like we have things we don’t use anymore, I post them on Craigslist so they’ll get use. That way I’m reusing and recycling.
This month, I’d really like to finish cleaning out our house. I tackled the mess that is DH’s office and started to organize our enormous pile of books. I hope to donate/give away most of the books, make his office useable, and set up a craft area for me.

Also I haven’t worked out at all (unless you count all the cleaning) but hopefully I can get that started this month.

For your blog header, I highly recommend that you talk to Caroline at the Bingham Diaries (http://www.thebinghamdiaries.com/).

For your Etsy shop, let’s talk. I’d be happy to feature it on my blog.

For making the time to create, go read my friend Lori at http://anartistsyearoff.blogspot.com/. She has a thriving jewelry business but is taking this year off to really create. (Hence, the second blog that’s all about the process.) One thing she’s talked about several times in the past month is how much she wants to accomplish and how she’s organizing her time to make it happen.

For your house, break everything down into smaller, more manageable chunks that you can accomplish in 5-15 minutes. Also, go check out the Fly Lady’s website for more organizing ideas.

I think that might cover it all. :-)

Hi Eco Karen,
Love your little notebooks. I find little precious books like this are perfect for affirmations, gratitude, logging extraordinarily sweet and beautiful events in life.
Love your “precious notebooks”
Diana
