Local Farmers Market Opens for the Season

Despite the oil spill in the Gulf, how top-kill method by BP failed to stop the gushing, and how the recent article said that organic is no better than conventional food – I felt GREAT this weekend. Why? My local farmers market in Pleasantville, NY opened on Saturday with a ribbon cutting ceremony and entertainment throughout the morning.

It was great to see those familiar smiling faces of vendors who started their day before the sun up. I saw some new vendors too with exciting products to try, like goat milk cheeses (it still takes getting used to), handmade soaps and essential oils, Italian specialty pastas and sauces, exotic mushrooms, and other intriguing produces and herbs.

To be able to shop for food from growers and artisans that I knew, made me feel so much “in control” as I was feeling so “out of control” with my environment lately. The beautiful weather seemed to promise better week ahead as I gathered my food and came home, filling my head, full of plans and ideas for meals for the week.

This is what we are eating this week! Strawberry season is here!!

There were so many cut herbs and potted herbs, I couldn’t resist to buy a few. I put the cut herbs in glass jars as soon as I got home as they will last longer in water. I’m so excited about my new discovery this year – chocolate mint! (the potted herb on the left) And oh boy, they smell just like Thin Mints!

Oh, and one of the organic farmers liked my produce bag! She suggested that I sell them at the market. I just may.

And here are some pictures of my blissful day at the market.

How can you NOT have a great day when you are greeted by a smiling cow with shades?

After all that shopping, I was thirsty for Peppermint Citrus Sun Tea with the ingredients I bought. Combine 1/2 cup of thoroughly washed fresh mint leaves, sliced lime, lemon, and orange wedges in a glass pitcher of filtered water. Let is sunbath for a few hours – longer the better. Add some ice cubes and sweeten with your favorite sweetener.

How was your Memorial Day Weekend?

@Kim...you are too funny. I think I'll follow your lead and have some Doritos myself. :) @Mary...I LOVE my fishmonger. They have the freshest fish and shellfish. I love getting their quids, clams and I even bought oysters from them before and learned to shuck them! And they fish in Long Island Sound out of Hampton Bay. I could sell my produce bags this summer but I don't know if I'll have time. It's a busy year for my family.

Love the photos -- what abundance! And I am so jealous that you have shellfish at your farmers market! It reminded me of my old farmers market in Connecticut which had fresh lobster. I miss it so much. And I think the idea of your selling your produce bags at the farmers market is brilliant! I vote that you give it a try!

Gorgeous photos! When I am feeling down about the environment, the Farmer's Market always makes me feel better - seeing the fresh produce and all the people who care. Now I'm going to go eat some Cheetos since organic food isn't good for me anyway ;-)
