NYC Needs More Bike Lanes and So Does Your City

This is from Herald Square in NYC. From looking at this sign, you’d think that the whole city is bike friendly. But it’s not. It’s pretty dangerous to bike riders. Remember the scene in “No Impact Man” when his wife Michelle is talking about how nervous she is about him riding his bike everywhere because he was hit by a car once? Yeah. It’s not safe at all.

So, Colin Beavan wrote an Op-Ed article to ask for more bike lane in NYC.

Read about it on The Daily News. Write to the editors and support him.

If NYC changes its policy, you know what will happen to the rest of the country, right?

So it doesn’t matter if you are not from NY or not. This affects you too.

So, let’s support him.

Let’s cut down on carbon emission.

Let’s bike to work. And let’s do it safely.

The scenes in "No Impact Man" where he and his family are bicycling through the streets of NYC were very nerve-wracking for me. I hope the efforts to add bike lanes comes to fruition. I will definitely support his efforts. DC recently started adding bike lanes, bit by bit, on a trial basis. It is greatly needed as there are many cyclists, plus the Capital Bike Share program (http://www.capitalbikeshare.com/) has been growing by leaps and bounds, which has increased the number of bikes on the road.

Ha! I just saw a pic from a person who happened to visit DC and posted a bike rack for Bike Share on Twitter. What a coincidence! Yes, riding a bike in NYC is putting your life in danger. I've been in situations where I had to hit the brakes to avoid hitting a cyclist who's weaving in and out of traffic because there are no bike lanes!! And now, there are rickshaws too so it behooves the city to make room for cyclists. It only makes sense.
