Review: Earth Mama Angel Baby Works Magic for Old Mamas and Babies Too

Earth Mama Angel Baby Review by ecokaren

I have a beef with Earth Mama Angel Baby.

Yes, I do. I ignored Earth Mama Angel Baby products for years because, 1.) I’m not a NEW mom – even though, I feel like a NEW mom when NEW issues come up regarding my kids that catches me off-guard…these kids…but that’s not what I meant. And 2.) I don’t have a baby. Well, I mean, my kids will always be babies to me but not that kind of a baby. But, again, you know what I mean.

Mind you, I saw Earth Mama Angel Baby products everywhere, including my local Whole Foods Market. But honestly, I didn’t pay attention, thinking, I don’t have kids in diapers and my sore nipples from breastfeeding days are long gone, so, I thought, why would I need their products geared towards new moms and new borns?

But I recently had the pleasure of testing a set of their products. My cousin recently had a baby – a real new baby – and I wanted to be the guinea pig before recommending them to Earth Mama. And with the recent news from Johnson & Johnson that they still use carcinogens in their products but will eliminate them by 2014, I wanted to make sure that I give them the safest products for their new angel.

And boy, do I regret not using these awesomeness all this time! So why the beef with the company? For misleading us to think that the products are JUST for new moms and babies! I think that’s mislabeling, IMHO, because…

Earth Mama Angel Baby ROCKS for this old mom and my {matured} baby too!

OK, it’s really my fault for NOT thinking ‘outside the box’. But in all seriousness, if they are gentle, über safe and non-toxic without all the garbage that cause cancer, organ failure, endocrine disruption, and all the other non-sense for babies and new moms, they’ve got to be safe enough for the rest of us too, right?

It’s like that “Baby on Board” signs on cars or warning labels that says “Not for pregnant mothers…” I think every car carries a precious cargo and we should be just as careful as pregnant moms about using certain products.

So I just ignored the names like “Nipple Butter” and “New Mama Bottom Spray” and got creative. After all, my breastfeeding and post-partum recovery days, albeit still fresh in my memory (trust me, you don’t forget those things if you are a mama, regardless of your age), are long gone. So I tried them in ways that fit this old mama and my “matured” baby.

What Earth Mama Angel Baby products are made of

The ingredient labels indicate nothing, I mean, N.O.T.H.I.N.G., that I can’t pronounce. They have an impeccable rating from Environmental Working Group. They use USDA certified organic ingredients on many items. And get this – They are GLUTEN-FREE! They are very VERY transparent about their ingredient list. No hiding behind false claims or mislabeling. The company has been endorsed by so many respected blogs and organizations that it’s too numerous to mention. Read all the awesome reviews from customers of Earth Mama Angel Baby on Amazon. These are customers who wrote in after trying various products.

According to Earth Mama’s website…

We use the highest-quality, certified-organic or organically grown herbs and oils for our teas, bath herbs, gentle handmade soaps, salves, lotions and massage oils. Our products are 100% free of toxins, cruelty-free, gluten-free, vegan, and free from all artificial preservatives, fragrances and dyes. Our commitment to honor the earth and her valuable resources extends to our packaging as well – we use only eco-friendly recyclable or reused/reusable packaging and packing materials.

earth mama angel baby package

I was impressed with their commitment to being really “natural” and walking the walk in keeping us safe from toxins. As you know, the word “natural” is meaningless because companies can just slap on the word on a bottle, thinking people will think it’s safe, when they use toxic but “natural” ingredients. But not Earth Mama. And as they promised, the items were shipped in a recycled cardboard and was packaged with recyclable newspaper stuffing. No plastic bubbles there. And their bottles are recyclable plastics and the refillable bottle was definitely a plus in my book.

What did I test?

natural-nipple-butter-jarNatural Nipple Butter (just forget the image of the cracked nipple for a second. It’s not pretty anyway. And it hurts like a big stinking mama, let me tell you!) - The ingredients in this great moisturizing salve, which is essentially for any cracked and dried skin, are:  Olea europaea (organic olive) oil, Theobroma cacao (organic cocoa) seed butter, Butyrospermum parkii (organic shea) butter, Euphorbia cerifera (candelilla) wax, Mangifera indica (mango) butter, Calendula officinalis (organic calendula) flower extract.

So tell me, are there anything on this list that doesn’t seem safe to you? Nope. Not in my mind they are not. Hence, why wouldn’t it be good for anyone’s dry skin? So, on it went on my daughter’s eczematous wrist. And boy, did it moisturize her cracked wrist pronto! It started to feel smooth instantly and she said the itching stopped! And it didn’t smell like medicine and she loved putting it on her wrist every morning.

Earth Mama Angel Baby Before and After

This is with just ONE application! Needless to say, if it works like magic on cracked nipple and eczematous skin, AND it’s safe, then, it’s staying in my house for sure!

new-mama-bottom-spray
New Mama Bottom Spray - I never had an episiotomy and wouldn’t want to find out how insanely uncomfortable and painful it must feel. But I figured, if the ingredients list in this spray is any indication, it must really soothe the cut and makes you feel cool and refreshing. So why wouldn’t it calm any irritated skin?

Here are the ingredients: Water, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Leaf Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Kosher vegetable glyserin, Lavandula Angustifolia (Organic Lavender) flower oil, Mentha Piperita (Organic Peppermint) leaf oil.

So, where did I use this? Again, on my daughter’s eczematous skin. She had some inflamed spots on the folds of her neck that was bothering her – a very common spot and also very common symptom before it starts to dry out. It cooled the area and the redness subsided within an hour. The smell was refreshing and the effect afterwards was amazing. She loved this spray too. I can also imagine this being used on minor burns too. A keeper in the kitchen, for sure. Again, just ignore the name of the spray. *snort*

Earthmama_body_wash_shampooCalming Lavender Shampoo and Body Wash - I remember hand-washing my babies’ clothes separately, with Ivory or Dreft baby laundry detergent. The perfume smell disguised…hmmm…come to think of it, I don’t know exactly what smell it was trying to cover up. I mean, baby’s smell gives me visceral reaction of wanting to hug and just pure affection and love; why do companies want to overload our senses with strong fragrances made with synthetic harmful chemicals? And this also goes for the chemicals many baby body wash and shampoos contain. Again, remember what Johnson and Johnson products contain and what they promise to do by 2014? Carcinogens like formaldehyde and phthalates come to mind.

Well, with Earth Mama Angel Baby products, you don’t have to wait until 2014 to avoid toxins in their products because they. don’t. use. any. Period. And there is no overpowering scent to cover up any smell. The scent is very subtle and is made with fruit and herbal extracts.

Here is the ingredient list: Organic Potassium cocoate, contains Organic Potassium olivate, Aloe barbadensis (organic aloe) leaf juice, Kosher Vegetable glycerin (palm sourced), Butyrospermun parkii (organic shea) butter, Vanilla planifolia (organic vanilla) fruit extract, Lavandula angustifolia (organic lavender) flower oil, Calendula officinalis (organic calendula) flower extract.

So, when I saw the list, and read that it’s for body and hair, I immediately used it for myself. Now, I have to admit: it didn’t work so well on this old mama’s brittle aging hair. I have thick, coarse peri-menopausal hair and not the wispy soft baby hair. My hair is drying out and can be unmanageable at times. The shampoo was too delicate and, get this, too gentle on my coarse hair. But if you have fine or soft normal fair, it would work perfectly.

But, I loved it as a body wash! It was gentle, smelled really soothing – ergo, the name “Calming Lavender” – and refreshing. I can imagine how it would be great for soothing a cranky baby in a calming bath.

That’s not where I loved it the most though. I used it in my laundry!

Yes, in my laundry, instead of Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap in my Borax Free Homemade Laundry Formula! In fact, I loved it so much, I included a link on the recipe for people to try. I used it for washing delicate lingerie by hand too. And as a foaming hand liquid soap! And get this, as a facial cleanser! See where I’m going with this?

Yes, Earth Mama Angel Baby is gentle enough for a baby but it’s great for this old mama and my “matured” baby too!

So here is….

My Message to the Big Mama at Earth Mama

I’m no marketing guru but I think I know a little bit about product development from working with many products I review here. And when I say you need to repackage and rename some of your products for a broader market, I don’t think I’m that far off. I’m sure you’ve sold your wonderful products to many customers who are not new mamas or babies. I can’t be the only one discovering these awesome products for every day use, right? So what do you say? Will  you rename some of them for us who are NOT breastfeeding mamas and babies with a diaper rash? We all want to use your awesome products, everyday, without covering the label. I think my daughter would take it to school if it didn’t say, “Nipple Butter”. Just sayin’…

I love Earth Mama Angel Baby. I used it for my daughter a few years ago and have used it religiously ever since. With this pregnancy, I have been so thankful for the Mama Bottom Spray and the Baby Butt Balm. I'm almost out and could really use a free refill...as I am having twins and these little ladies are already expensive

Earth Momma is a new brand to me ~ way back when my kids were babies we didn't even think about ingredients and there weren't as many choices either. Almost 10 years ago I began switching to healthier products for our personal use and cleaning. Thanks for the info on Earth Momma, I'll be trying some very soon!

I love the nipple butter. I have had much luck with breast feeding so I never needed to use it on my nipples. But I was sad I bought it, thinking I wasted money on something I will never use. So I found ways to use it. And just like the bottle says I use it on dry cracked skin. It works wonderfully!

I wonder if that cream would work on my poor cracked felting/dyeing/wood cutting hands? I have a brand new niece but I think I might have to steal that cream for myself. :D

I used this on my sons eczema for a couple of years with great results. I believe it was the butt balm. We have cleared his symptoms with dietary changes so I haven't used it in years but we loved it and I have bought some over the years for friends.

I remember taking Earth Mama heartburn tea when I was pregnant and it was amazing...nothing else worked. So I just purchased some for my mom and she is 75 years old. I agee...EMAB is not just for new mammas and babies! Thanks for sharing all this great info!
