My husband grew up in the Olympic Peninsula, in the Pacific Northwest, a corner of Washington state. Being a private person that he is, I will leave it at that and not go into details of the exact location of his childhood stomping grounds. You’ll probably laugh anyway, wondering, “People really live in that part of the country?”
His parents still live here – the most gorgeous part of the country, I think – where air is so clean, the only visible particles in the sky are the moisture droplets that linger at the foothills of Mount Rainier – the majestic state’s treasure, visible from far and wide, from anywhere in the state, really … from the sky, even before you land at Sea Tac Airport.
My mother-in-law has a tiny garden that she started as a hobby, not really to grow food but just for fun. But look what grew out of her whiskey barrel compost. Pumpkins with ginormous leaves. Glad to see a bee while I was gawking at them.
Her “neglected” Lillies bloomed from every bud that were on the stalk. She said, they “just grow” perennially without her fussing over them. And the intoxicating smell….oh. my….I had to put the vase in another room because the aroma was so strong. You’d never smell this luscious fragrance from flower shop Lillies. And her avocado plant just grew out of her compost, “voluntarily” (cute!), like her pumpkins, she exclaimed.
Three blueberry bushes – more like shrubs or border hedges – yield the biggest and most sweetest blueberries I ever tasted – totally organic, of course. And her garlic bed is giving her all the garlic she’ll ever need this year from the organic cloves she planted last October. Just like that. “Easy”, she says. Eat your heart out Anna! (My gardenista Rambo friend always have gardening issues with animals, insects, bolting too early, dry weather, too much rain….she can go on…But she’s from New Jersey. Need I say more?)
I have more images from the area coming up but I just wanted to share these amazing pictures of what nature gives us, even if you don’t try too hard. She tells me her gardening skill leaves much to be desired but her composting skills can beat anyone like no one’s business. After all, look what grew out of her compost! I think she’s modest. Don’t you think?
Hope you are having a great week!
