Turnaround Design Product Review and Giveaway

GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED When Shannon Whealey of Turnaround Design contacted me to review her eco-friendly calendar, I was curious. I thought, “How can you make calendars eco-friendly? Calendars are the epitome of waste – once it’s used up, it’s garbage! You can’t reuse January of last year?” So, you can imagine the delightful smile on my face when I received the nicely packaged calendar printed on recycled paper in recycled [...]

iRecycle – Earth911.com iPhone App

Earth 911 is one of my favorite green websites. It announced recently that it created an application for iPhone to locate recycling centers near you. Read below for more details. iRecycle makes it easy to find recycling locations anywhere in the U.S. Find places to drop-off your old cell phone (or water bottle or motor oil or… well, you get the idea), get directions and find out what else they [...]

Bad economy hits the recycling industry

My new year’s resolution, if you remember, is to be optimistic this year. Well, it’s been really hard to stay optimistic when friends and family are getting laid off all around me. I worry about today and tomorrow and not just the future. I don’t spend as much money, in fear that something ‘bad’ might happen. I reuse even more now. I am extra careful with my purchases. And believe [...]

Michael’s joins the recycling fun.

Just a quick post……. I don’t know when Michael’s (the craft store) started having Plastic Bag Recycling Bins in their stores but I was so pleased to find one in a local store today. So I took a picture to share it with you. This is the type of bins that are in supermarkets and Barnes and Nobles. Yay!

Barnes and Noble joins the recycling fun

You know when you want to buy a red car and the only color cars you see on the road are red cars? Well, now that I know you can recycle filmy plastic bags, all I notice are those big tall recycling bins with circling arrows indicating “Plastic Bags Recycling”. (As I repeatedly make this point, I can hear myself sounding…….uh……stupid. Let me clarify that. I knew I can recycle [...]

What do I do with all these bread bags?

We don’t eat that much bread in our house. But lately, my son wants PB&J morning, noon, and night….on (gulp!) white bread. I have no problem with peanut butter (although almond or cashew butter would be better but I’ll settle with peanut butter as long as we are not consuming it by gallons) or the globs of fruit variety (at least they are from fruit) because I can get organic [...]

Environmentally responsible act a day!

Did you hear about this guy who did not throw out trash for a whole entire year? Yeah, it’s true and he blogged about it. He just finished his stint and I just caught a glimpse of it at the end. That’s mind boggling to me. As much as I try to recycle things around my house, I’m always throwing something out. In fact, today is a garbage pick up [...]

Freecycle

If you are like me, you have things that you can’t use but you can’t even think about throwing them out either. You can always donate to Goodwill but can’t haul it to the store or can’t seem to get your act together to make arrangements to have them be picked up. Well, an organization called Freecycle.org is your answer. You can list your item, find a person who wants [...]

Paper or Plastic? Neither

No doubt about it, plastic can be a lifesaver. Or at least make life convenient. But it can be lethal too. The latest plastic news that hit the media was relating to Bi Phenol – A (BPA) found in popular Nalgene water bottles and baby bottles. But it’s also in places that we can’t even imagine….like on the lining of milk cartons and on organic banana stems!! Even the famous [...]

Second Chances

I am happiest when I’m creating and producing…. when I’m doing something good for me and for others. So I decided to make things…make things from what I would normally throw out…from things others donated….from things that had prior lives (love that term). I give them second chances (my first choice for the name of the etsy store and blog.) Don’t get me wrong. I love new things too but [...]
